G.R.E.A.T.
The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program is a program for junior high school students aimed at combating the rise in gangs and gang violence. First developed in the Phoenix, Arizona area by the Phoenix Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, it has spread to all 50 states and several foreign countries.
Curriculum
G.R.E.A.T. is a thirteen week program with lessons on crimes, victims and punishment, gang recruitment procedures, conflict resolution, why gangs use and sell drugs, goal setting, and diversity acceptance. Students are held to strict standards of behavior while in the program. A culmination is held at the conclusion of the program and all students receive diplomas for completion of the program.
The program is currently taught at the Papillion Junior High and St. Columbkille schools, and the department has three G.R.E.A.T. certified officers on staff. The current G.R.E.A.T. officer is Phil Tackett.
